SIERRA VISTA — The Sierra Vista 12U boys traveling baseball team competed in the Mardi Gras Baseball tournament held in Tucson last weekend.
The team finished Saturday’s pool play with a record of 1-1, beating the Rio Rico Warriors 11-9 and losing to the Tucson Copperheads, 2-1.
Sunday’s bracket game was a rematch between SV Blackout and Rio Rico Warriors where team Blackout was again victorious, 5-4. With the win, team Blackout moved on to the semifinals to face the top-seeded Tucson Indians, who were 3-0 at that point.
The combination of great pitching and a five-run first inning propelled team Blackout to a 6-3 win and into the championship game.
In the championship game, team Blackout faced a Tucson Scorpions team they had played on two separate occasions in Phoenix, splitting the pair.
Again team Blackout got great pitching but saw itself trailing the entire game after a two-run first inning by the Scorpions.
Team Blackout did have an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the sixth trailing 3-2 with runners on second and third but failed to get the runners across.
