SIERRA VISTA — The stage is set with Republican Jesse Kelly the apparent winner on the Republican side of the special primary to fill the unexpired term of former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

In 2010, Kelly almost defeated Giffords in that year’s congressional race.

Facing Kelly is Giffords’ staff district manager, Democrat Ron Barber.

Democrat Ron Barber issued a statement before final vote tallies for the Republican Party were tabulated Tuesday night, calling out Jesse Kelly on policies that Barber says will benefit the rich at the expense of the middle class.

Unfortunately, Jesse Kelly’s agenda would put the rich first and leave middle class families last. He supports a radical tax plan that would increase taxes by 23 percent for middle class families while lowering them for millionaires and billionaires,” Barber said.

Today’s primary election among Republicans vying for the seat formerly held by U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will highlight Arizona headlines by the time you wake up Wednesday.

But another “election” of sorts, the GOP nomination for president, is also signaling the start of a new chapter in the race that will culminate in November.
