Vehicle ID etching to take place on May 12

SIERRA VISTA — On Saturday, May 12, the Sierra Vista Citizen’s Police Academy Associates will be hosting a VIN etching event at the Lowe’s parking lot.

The process of chemically-etching the vehicle identification number into a vehicle’s windows takes less than 15 minutes and could help prevent vehicle thefts, said Tracy Grady, community resource officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

SIERRA VISTA — One person has been airlifted to a Tucson hospital after a car collided into a marked police vehicle escorting participants in the Special Olympic Torch Run event this morning.

It was just before 9 a.m. when a red, Ford four-door sedan headed northbound on Highway 90 struck the rear vehicle of the torch run escort line, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department. At the time of the incident, the police cruiser was located south of Airport Road and did have its emergency lights activated.

Elderly man who wandered from family found

An elderly man suffering from dementia went missing for more than an hour Monday afternoon before he was located by police.

The 72-year-old wandered away from a family member while at Walmart and was eventually found near the Stone Field Complex on Tacoma Street north of the store, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

A man who died after a single-vehicle accident on Highway 92 on Sunday was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when help arrived at the scene, police revealed Tuesday.

Jacob M. Honeycutt, 22, was driving a vehicle north on Highway 92 when he crossed the median and struck two trees on the west side of the highway behind the Texas Roadhouse restaurant.

One woman was transported to the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center Friday morning following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Coronado Drive and Fry Boulevard.

Brenna Quebbemann, 76, suffered from abrasions typical with airbag deployment, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

The Honda sedan driven by Quebbemann was traveling south on Coronado crossing Fry while a second vehicle, a Ford pick-up truck, was traveling north on Coronado and turning west onto Fry when the collision occurred, Grady said.

Police warn public of check scams

Fraudulent check schemes are an ongoing issue for the Sierra Vista community, with unscrupulous scammers frequently coming up with new takes on what is now an all too common scam.

While they may have different ways to hook the unsuspecting victim, these scams all end in the same way: The victim is asked to deposit a check for a large sum of money, then send a portion of that money back to the check provider in the form of a money order.

Police kill dog after it attacked its owner

SIERRA VISTA — Officers were forced to shoot and kill an aggressive dog in an apartment in Sierra Vista after it attacked its owner.

The dog, thought to be a German Shepherd and Chow mix, bit its owner in her arm and head before police were contacted at 8:25 p.m. on Thursday and responded to Vista de la Sierra Apartments, 1555 Busby Drive, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

When the officers responded to the apartment, they found the victim still inside the apartment with the dog,” Grady said.

Suspicious package causes closure of Sierra Vista K-Mart

SIERRA VISTA — The K-Mart in Sierra Vista was closed for about five hours after a suspicious package was found outside the store on Sunday morning.

An employee contacted the Sierra Vista Police Department at 8:58 a.m. to report that a briefcase with a key taped to its top had been left about 15 feet from the west entrance of the store during a sidewalk sale, Public Information Officer Tracy Grady said.

 SIERRA VISTA — Turning out for a good cause and a little gunfire, about 27 area participants took to the Sierra Vista Shooting Range on Saturday to blast their way through the law enforcement qualification course as a way to raise money for local Special Olympics athletes.

With the sun thoroughly covered by clouds and temperatures hovering near acceptable, it was an almost perfect day to get outdoors.

Police to crack down on improper turns




SIERRA VISTA — Sierra Vista Police are going to be paying special attention to drivers making improper turns that have become a “consistent problem,” said the department public information officer.

Officer Tracy Grady has noticed an increase in collisions caused by drivers failing to remain in the same lane while making turns.

Drivers taking wide turns into parallel lanes is an ever-present issue found on roads throughout the city, Grady said.
