The special primary race to watch is the Republican runoff on Tuesday.

Vying for the GOP nomination to seek a win to fill the unexpired term Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords are four Republicans — former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords are State Sen. Frank Antenori, Jesse Kelly, Martha McSally and Dave Sitton.

Waiting to take the Republican winner on is Democrat Ron Barber, Giffords former district manager.

A series of questions were asked of the four GOP candidates for the special Congressional District 8 seat during an evening dinner of the 1200 Club.

Nearly 100 people were in attendance and heard the quartet of hopefuls answer four questions, which addressed how to protect Fort Huachuca from any future Base Realignment and Closure Commission action, being part of a political team, border security and how to mobilize the Republican party.

Responding were State Sen. Frank Antenori, Jesse Kelly, Dave Sitton and Martha McSally.

SIERRA VISTA — Calling her Saturday afternoon talk at the Cochise County Republican Committee headquarters a job interview, Martha McSally said, “I’m applying for a job to represent you.”

In the room were more than 40 people who heard the retired Air Force colonel say “I have a fire in my belly” and that flame is to become the person who fills former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Congressional District 8 seat in the House of Representatives and to continue on to seek the new CD2 seat.

Saying he is a moderate Democrat, a person who will not just say he wants to reach across the political divide in Washington, D.C., Ron Barber said it was a hard decision for him to decide to run for office.
In his life of public service, “I never planned to run for office,” he told more than 75 people at the Democratic Headquarters.

SIERRA VISTA — Even though politicians may disagree on issues, there is no reason they cannot work together for the voters, a Democratic candidate for upcoming election for Congressional District 2 said Wednesday.

Steve Farley said while he was hoping Gabrielle Giffords would have been better to run for the redrawn district for the U.S. House of Representatives, but her resignation from her seat in January a little more than a year after being critically wounded after being shot in the head led him to his decision to run.

State Senator Paula Aboud to seek congressional seat

 State Senator Paula Aboud of Tucson Monday announced her campaign for Congress for the regular fall election in Congressional Distict No. 2, the term to start in January 2013.  Aboud made her announcement by video, and will be conducting a telephone town hall conversation with the voters in the newly drawn congressional district Monday night.  The new CD2 contains the majority of Pima County and all of Cochise County.

Ron Barber, the former district manager for Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, announced Thursday he will be seeking to fill the three-term congresswoman’s Arizona Congressional District 8 seat.

And, another Democrat — Dr. Matt Heinz — who earlier announced his candidacy to replace the unexpired congresswoman’s term, will be ending his campaign for the CD8 special election but will continue to seek the newly-formed CD2 seat.

SIERRA VISTA — Ron Barber, former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ district manager, announced today he  will be seeking to fill the three-term congresswoman’s Arizona Congressional District 8 seat.
Barber told the Herald/Review, three weeks ago Giffords asked him to consider running in the special election and after much though and discussions with his wife and other family members he decided to seek election for the seat on Monday.

Standing before a packed gymnasium of high school students, Daniel Hernandez talked about his experiences as a 17-year-old, going door-to-door, volunteering to work for politicians that he believed in.

Hernandez is the intern credited for saving Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ life during the horrific 2011 shooting in Tucson. He actually met Giffords in 2008 when he was volunteering for another politician, admired her as a person and congresswoman, and started volunteering for her in 2010.
