Biltmore Who’s Who honors Sierra Vista estate advisor




SIERRA VISTA — Helen Kea, estate planning advisor for Secure Estate Management, has been selected as an executive member of the Biltmore Who’s Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Helen Kea’s commitment to excellence in insurance and estate planning.

Kea, a senior member for her team for more than 15 years at her organization, has worked as both a manager of the Southern Arizona Region and as a Million Dollar Roundtable qualifier for more than a decade.

 SIERRA VISTA — Although Phyllis Prickett will be 88 at the end of the month, she is both excited and depressed about politics.

What do you expect from a woman who was instrumental in founding the local League of Women Voters nearly a quarter of a century ago and made a motion to the group last month to dissolve?

Sometimes I have to tell myself not to be mad. I have to work hard on not being judgmental,” the diminutive Phyllis said.

FORT HUACHUCA — While staff members of the Network Enterprise Technology Command were on ride, some on horses, they took time to rest their mounts and have them fed, while the two-leggers walked up a hill to absorb some 1880s Signal Corps history.

Meanwhile not far from the post’s Burger King, soldiers and family members of a more technological Signal Corps were waiting to put on a human feed bag.

Buena High School

Today is a half day at Buena for teacher in-service. Students will be dismissed at 10:55 a.m. 

The Arizona State National History Day Competition was on Saturday. Buena had two groups competing in the Senior Group Exhibit Category. One of these groups, comprised of John Brewer, Haley Harper, Kayley Moss and Caryn Zaruba won first place for their category and can advance to the National Competition in June in Washington, D.C. Their topic was “The Iron Curtain.”

Smith signs on to be the next Cochise rodeo coach

DOUGLAS — Cochise College has tapped Rick Smith to be its next head rodeo coach.

In accepting the job, Smith will leave a 17-season coaching career with Central Wyoming College, where he started the Rustlers’ rodeo program, then helped 24 teams qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo and watched a dozen of them finish in the top 10.

A 1977 graduate of Buena High School, now Army Maj. Gen. Jeff Buchanan is heading for his next assignment in Washington state where he will be the deputy commander of I Corps.

He envisions his deployments to Iraq, and work he has done between those tours, will translate to helping soldiers at Fort Lewis be prepared for what they will encounter, even though it will be in Afghanistan.

Coach, teacher and mentor,” is as he sees part of his mission, which will include 10 brigades on the fort.

Dever confident after court session

After hearing oral arguments Wednesday in the nation’s highest court over Arizona’s embattled immigration law, Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever said he believes the justices will at least allow some of Senate Bill 1070 to be approved.

While he was impressed by Arizona’s Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s special team of lawyers, Dever said it appeared to him the U.S. Solicitor General was not as prepared.

The first Benefit Dinner in support of the Forgach House Shelter for Abused Women and Children was held on Saturday evening, February 11, at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center. Despite several other local events taking place that same evening, the affair was well attended and turned out to be a great success. 

In attendance was the newly appointed Director of Catholic Community Services for Southern Arizona, Mr. Michael Vetter and his wife Cathy.

Stoner survives recall election

Palominas Fire District Board Chair Debbie Stoner survived a recall attempt on Tuesday, pulling in nearly 58 percent of all votes cast.

Stoner received 383 votes, while her only challenger, John “Eddie” Starnes, received 275, according to unofficial results from the Cochise County Elections Office. There were also three write-in votes.
